Best Run Club in PL?
....Obviously not us, but who?

I do feel one club stands out for the way it is managed from top to bottom.

Trevor, Of course I can't be absolutely certain that Chelsea's policy is to deliberately hoover up more talent than they can use in order to prevent other clubs from signing them up, but that is the outcome and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if that was part of the plan.
Of course Kenyon stated that the club intended to become self sufficient, after all they could not rely on the bent Russian bankrolling them forever, but in reality they still haven't achieved it, otherwise they'd be having to borrow half a billion quid to build a new ground. They still rely on crooked money and are not genuinely self sufficient.

Saints went into admin but turned it around completely.

We were saved by the daves (apparently) from the same date.

Back in the pl the same season

Hands down they have done better than us with less since.

In recent years Southampton but as someone mentioned it not always been a bed of roses

you could argue arsenal bearing in mind the stadium and league placings and money spent?

Well nobody would argue that Southampton were well-run leading up to going into administration, or that it was any sort of trick - I think I'm right they were relegated during that period with a points penalty applied to their next season in League One (which eventually cost them a play-off place), so if it was a trick it was a pretty useless one!

AOI

TBH mate I don't think it's a conscious attempt to block other teams developing talent. The way they look at it is that a player is an asset, that asset has an amortised value on the company books. That value increases as the player becomes better, goes out on loan etc and eventually is sold for a realised profit. It's purely about money and becoming self sufficient, which is what Kenyon said was his long term goal when he went there.

Re: Best Run Club in PL?
Trevor, what Chelsea are doing with their player farm is nothing short of scandalous. In September they had 38 players out on loan. Harvesting up so many players is a clear and deliberate attempt to prevent the competition from getting their hands on young talent. I can't see how they're allowed to get away with it as they're blatantly abusing the system.

Re: Best Run Club in PL?
People have very short memories re Southampton.
My recollection, do correct me if I'm wrong, is they used the Administration trick to great advantage. Buying players they couldn't afford; going bust and leaving creditors high and dry. They then marched from League One to Premier League in double quick time, with new owners and debt free. Very frustrating for competitors who ran their businesses within budget and so languished in the lower leagues.
Wasn't it one of the main examples cited when FA toyed with making Administration result in relegation of at least one division?
So a very well run club if those are the standards one judges by.
We got heavily punished for a so called serious breach of rules, simply because we got involved in the first multi owned player mess, which hurt no-one. They played broke no rules but are morally repugnant and they are cited as being well run.

I reckon if you look with an outsiders eye we dont look too bad.
New Stadium.
Better team
Better Management
Better ownership (look back a few years)
Generally improving league position

West Ham. My well run club.
Or Bournemouth
A year ago I might have said Swansea
So what do I know?

Trevor B 4:47 Fri Feb 17
Re: Best Run Club in PL?
Indeed AOI. I also don't think you can consider them to be well run when they treat the majority of their players as assets to boost their book value and to be sold for profit, most of them never making it to the first team.

Re: Best Run Club in PL?
For anyone to suggest that Chelsea are a well run club is crazy.
The bent Russian has now spent over £1BILLION on his hobby, and is planning to spend over another £half a BILLION on a new ground.
When you have that kind of massive advantage over your competition then it's not going to be difficult to appear to be well run.
I think some of the better run clubs would be Burnley, Stoke and WBA, all of whom are overachieving simply by being in the Premier league, particularly Burnley.
By comparison I'd say we are an underachieving club that are not very well run.

Re: Best Run Club in PL?
stewie,
Chelski owe their position to Abramovich, but no longer relie on Abramovich. The are being well run and do not need his cash injections

Manure are a terrible example, cannot except them as well run after the past 3-4 years, complete joke

I like the way Barca are run, with supports kind of democratically running the club. In the UK generally I do not see the opportunity for fans to be involved in the running of clubs. It is quite sad as most clubs only exist because of the fans...

Alex V that's because there is no such thing as well run football club, now there is a discussion for best run business brand in football.

Supporters whinge because they are honest when they've laid out money to be short changed that is why those that moan the least in adverse times and are satisfied that their club/team did their best are the ones following the best run PL club.

Football is fucked when you start wanting to discuss the business side of a SPORT.

I hope you're right, because I see the worth in supporters taking an interest in how clubs are run. Especially as in the modern era it has such a direct relationship with how the club will perform on the pitch.

But I stand by the argument that being a supporter gives no extra insight. Supporters like a good old irrational whinge about all sorts of things - I would think they'd be less trustworthy on such issues than independents.

"And I doubt most supporters give a toss about the subject. "

Not sure about that, V son.

The prime example being Man Utd.

By some people's measures on here, the Glazers are amongst the best owners on the planet - given the club's trophy haul since they took over.
However, you won't find too many Man Utd fans with a nice word to say about them.

How does being a supporter give you any extra insight into whether a club is well-run or not? It doesn't. And I doubt most supporters give a toss about the subject.

Re: Best Run Club in PL?
I don't know who is the best run club but for me it has to be the set of supporters that are least aggrieved in defeat the set of supporters who feel
there's nothing more they could have done on a regular basis, who don't feel betrayed by owners or let down by the staff and most of all feel part of and integral to their club.

I doubt there is one to be honest.

Football is for the people not balance sheet nerds, they are the ones sucking out the enjoyment of sport as a whole.

Re: Best Run Club in PL?
Not behind the times at all, they've performed well in the transfer market for a couple of years.

Their entire existence is still reliant on Abramovich.

As I say, there's a clear distinction for me between the club and the team - there clearly isn't for you.

My thinking is shaped in no small part by events close to home.
There's very little about the club in it's current WEST HAM LONDON form to like. There's still plenty about West Ham United to like though.

Alex V 3:22 Fri Feb 17
Re: Best Run Club in PL?
If it were a level playing field for clubs you could say the best run were simply the clubs winning trophies. But it's not a level playing field. A small club could be run perfectly and still win less trophies than an poorly run big club.

Mex Martillo 3:18 Fri Feb 17
Re: Best Run Club in PL?
stewie,
Best run club has to win stuff, what the point?!, sorry, but for me that is crap.

As for Chelski, You are behind the times, Chelski work like Southhampton these days, sell as much as they buy and net spending is not high. They keep the best players to from a good team and win stuff = best run club

JustAFatKevinDavies, thats Chelskis plan, 30 players in the shop window on loan, they will keep the best and sell the not so good and make a nice wedge in the process

Yes okay the arse won the FA cup, great achievement and would love to do it, but compared to other clubs in their spending league, not good enough. Not the best run.
